The Collegiate Peaks Golf Course offers a wide variety of instructional programs to meet the needs of men, women and juniors. Individual swing and short game lessons start at $30.00 for a 1/2 hour with our resident pros Larry and Emily. Group lessons are available upon request.
After College in North Carolina and a 2 year stint in the Army, Larry landed in Colorado Springs in 1970. Jobs in finance, banking and insurance actually fostered an addiction to golf. Some slight notoriety lead to an opportunity as one of Dow Finsterwald’s assistants at the Broadmoor Golf Club in 1974. Six years of teaching, playing and practicing didn’t produce a skill level conducive to making money consistently. Children happened, as did responsibility, and the realities of life forced a very reluctant attitude adjustment.
The golf bum went into business as the owner of a millwork operation that grew and prospered nicely. By 1980, the city had taken its toll on both Larry and Michele, so they sold out and teamed up as partners in Stiefel’s Tool and Equipment right here in Buena Vista. That was 1992, and they have operated as a team in several other endeavors to include Pancho’s Restaurant, and Triple L Communications all the while operating as a merchant marine captain and fly fishing guide, both in Colorado and the Florida tarpon flats around Crystal River and Homosassa.
Larry’s first retirement came in 2008, as did beach life at South Padre Island. By 2011 boredom overtook him and when an opportunity to manage River Bend Country Club came along, he returned to golf. Colorado is where the family and the heart was, so when Mr. Hachmann found him, like the proverbial “bad penny”, he’s back.
Emily Wood started golfing at age 3, played her first competitive tournament when she was 7, and has been competing ever since. She earned a 6th place finish both freshman and sophomore year at the 4A State Championship and then won the 4A State Championship her junior and senior years. Emily always wanted to play competitively at a Division 1 school and after weighing scholarship offers from several schools she signed with the University of Wyoming. Emily graduated with a major in Gender and Women Studies and a minor in Family Consumer Science. Her immediate goals are to push herself as far as possible and see where golf can take her. When not practicing or teaching lessons at the Collegiate Peaks Golf Course you can find Emily on playing competitively on the Cactus Tour or in other tournaments.
Youth and High School Play
Collegiate Peaks Golf Course is proud to support our local youth. The Buena Vista High School golf team plays and practices for free during their golf season, and Larry works with several of the team’s players individually. We are home to the annual Butch Brasswell Tournament, which is played in Salida and Buena Vista consecutively during the high school golf season and includes 8-10 competing teams.
Juniors learn the basics of golf and have fun with challenging and creative teaching techniques.
Excellent instructors – Shawna Kincaid and Emily Wood.
